After making a quick side-trip, Ember followed Reid back to her room, where Sherry, Ricky and Cris were already waiting for them. When they walked in, Sherry was sitting on her bed, curled against Ricky, looking half-asleep – Ember really couldn’t blame her; it had been an interminably long day. Cris was slightly more awake, perched on the edge of the desk under the window, his feet dangling an inch off the floor. He looked relieved when he saw Reid and Ember – well, more when he saw Ember than Reid.

“I was just about to go looking for you guys,” he said, sliding off the desk.

“Sorry,” Ember said, reluctantly pulling her fingers free of Reid’s. “We made a stop at the dorm kitchens on the way up. Thought everyone might be hungry.” She held up a bag full of snacks – packets of crisps, chocolate bars, cans of Irn-Bru and Coke.

At the mention of food, Sherry woke up a bit. “Sugar?”

“Yep, lots of it.” Ember reached into the bag and tossed her a can of Irn-Bru and a share-size packet of cheesy Doritos – Sherry’s favourites.

She caught them with a look of near-reverence on her face. “You’re my hero, Emz.”

“I know,” Ember replied with a grin. She glanced at Ricky. “Coke or Bru?”

“Coke.”

She tossed him a can and a Mars bar. She turned to Cris and held up a can of Irn-Bru, her brows raised questioningly. He nodded and caught the can as she lobbed it at him, and gratefully took a Snickers bar.

Ember grabbed a can of Coke, tossed another to Reid, and chowed down on some Maltesers and McCoys crisps. Once everyone had food and drinks in hand, they all sat down, sprawled around the room, and talked about the epic craziness of the entire day.

Really, Ember thought, we need the time to unwind – the comfort of sitting down and doing something normal.

Reid made jokes and traded insults with Ricky, Cris laughed at their banter, Sherry grinned as she shared her Doritos with her boyfriend. Ember sipped her Coke and joined the banter, throwing a Mars bar at Reid’s head when he said something obnoxious.

By the time the food was gone and everyone had worn through the sugar-rush, it was nearly two a.m.

Cris was the first to call it a night. He stood up and stretched his arms over his head. “I think I’m going to go now. I’m bloody exhausted and it was one hell of a day.” He paused, smiling a lop-sided little smile that brought out his dimples. “Thanks for letting me join the craziness. I wouldn’t have felt right if I’d just sat back and let you guys deal with Harry.”

Ricky shook his head. “Thanks for the help, mate. Consider yourself an honorary member of the team.”

Cris blushed a little, beaming. Ember expected Reid to have an outburst at this. She glanced at him where he was stretched out on her bed, but he just smiled languidly and raised a hand in a lazy wave.
